Saturday morning we all got up and Lem proposed that we all go have breakfast, so we got semi-ready, got the girls dressed, diaper bag packed, etc. I was doing Sycely’s hair in the family room where we were all gathered, including the cat. Lem all of a sudden says, “There’s someone on our deck.” My first though was it’s a neighborhood cat, or maybe a moose somehow got in the back yard. So I look out the glass doors looking on the deck to see what it is and come face to face with…my mom! It took a minute to register, because it was just so out of context for her to be at our house, all the way from California. My response was, “It’s my MOM! What is SHE doing here?” To which Lem replied, “Happy Mother’s Day!” What a surprise and wonderful treat. So we all headed off to breakfast, the surprise still settling with me. I just couldn’t believe he kept this plan a secret, not telling a soul for a whole week!
After breakfast Lem and my mom took Sycely to ballet school while Ella napped and I got ready for a Mrs. Alaska event I was doing that morning. I stopped by Sycely’s ballet school to get the final instructions for hair/make-up for her recital then headed off to my event while my mom took Sycely home. After the event wrapped up I headed home and we spent the afternoon in the sunshine (we had the best sunniest weekend so far this year-just for my mom!) at the downtown Saturday Market. From there we headed over to the 5th Ave mall and did a little shopping. The girls got me a pink Alaska Grown hoodie I’d really wanted as a Mother’s Day gift. That night we had a seafood banquet of crab and grilled scallops, cracked, grilled asparagus and mashed potatoes-yummy! The next morning, Mother’s Day Lem made us pancakes for breakfast and made me a light frappuccino and we all got ready and headed off to church. It was the first time I’d spent Mother’s Day with my mom in 15 years so the whole day in itself was such a special treat. Ella napped while we played in the sunshine and had some Tastee Freez lunch, picnic style in the backyard. Mom and I headed out to share some Mommy-Daughter time shopping around. We came home to have another seafood buffet with Lem’s parents. We had beer battered halibut, corn fritters, fried okra and grilled salmon-what a feast! We followed that up with some scrumptious s’mores. I roasted the most perfect marshmallow ever, and being true to mommy-hood, gave it to Sycely.
The next morning Lem made us another delicious (and fattening!) breakfast of French toast. We got to spend a few more hours together just hanging around the house, playing with the girls and visiting with my mom while she packed her last few belongings. Then, it was off the airport with her. It was a short, but fun and memory-filled visit and hands-down, the best Mother’s Day weekend I’ve ever had.
